Purpose: Students will begin to identify existing work and materials that can speak to their research.
Class Discussion: In this phase of the design process, it is helpful to look for existing technologies and experiences that can inspire your design. These are called precedents, and can come in three main types :
LOOKS LIKE - visual or material inspiration
WORKS LIKE - mechanical, experiential, or functional inspiration
CONCEPTUAL - an inspiring idea or story (we'll get back to this later)
The best precedents at this stage are those that spark curiosity or inspiration that can launch you into making your next prototype.
Instructions:
Step 01: Using your motion diagrams, find "Works Like" precedents for each of the motions that you chose. This should give you 3 precedents.
Tip: You may need to try out a couple of different google searches to discover precedents that you like.
Step 02: Using the textures that you created, find "Looks Like" precedents for each of them. This should give you another 3 precedents. You now have 6 total!
If you have some extra time, find more precedents!
Blog Post:
For each precedent, make a blog post with:
- An image or GIF
- A two-sentence description of what the precedent is/how it works
- A link to the source (where you found this information)
- Answer the question: Why did you choose this precedent? How does it inspire you?
