Exercise Title: Collaging

Purpose: Gain an understanding of augmented reality image targets and several tools that will be used in this studio.

Description: In this assignment each student will design a collage at home. For the collage contents choose images and text that you feel describes who you are or things that you like to do. Introduce yourself to use through the medium. Perhaps you play certain sports, or have a favorite movie. How can you use a single collage to show us your interests.

The second step of this project will be creating an augmented experience on top of this collage. Each student will select from a curated collection of 3D models and apply these models and additional text or information to the collage via augmented reality.

Materials:

  • Pens, Pencils
  • Sketchbooks
  • Laptops + Unity
  • Magazines
  • Scissors
  • Glue Sticks
  • Box Cutters

Instructions:

Part 1: To be done at home pre-studio.

  1. Brainstorm a collage idea. [5 mins]
  2. Sketch ideas for your collage. Use some scratch paper to plan out what kinds of imagery you would like to include.   Consider how you will space out the various images you are including.
  3. Using the examples provided if you need inspiration, create a collage using the materials you have gathered. Consider the tips below as you create your collage [20 mins]
    • Work on a flat surface with lots of space to organize materials.
    • Collages can be made of clippings from magazines. Choose parts of images you find interesting, or simply collect colors you like by cutting out the backgrounds of photos.
    • You do not need tape or glue to create the collage, in fact it is useful to be able to rearrange the elements of the collage as you work.
    • Use tape to fix clippings you accidentally tear while removing them. Also consider how mistakes can be turned into "opportunities" to try a different direction
    • Overlapping clippings can be very effective.
    • Be careful with scissors - get help from your parents if you need assistance clipping out your images.
  4. Once everything is in place, you can tape/glue the collage down if you are worried about pieces moving.
  5. Take a photo or scan the collage. Be sure to crop the photo so only the edges of the paper are showing.
  6.  Have this scan and the physical collage ready for the first day of class.

Make a Cam & Linkage

Jiyoo Jye
CamAndLinkage_PrintTemplate.pdf

Cardboard lends itself to different mechanisms compared to wood and acrylic. This mechanism combines aspects of the parallel linkage and eccentric cam. It also uses the springiness of cardboard as the returning force to bring the flag back down.

Learning Goals:

  1. Understand the basics of the cam and linkage mechanism.
  2. Apply your understanding of the mechanism to create a unique prototype.

Part I: Template model

Using the template file provided, you will follow step-by-step video instructions on how to recreate the cam and linkage cardboard model. To complete the activity, you will need cardboard, scissors or exacto, a dowel or a pencil.

Part II: Build your own version

Once you’ve completed the model, prototype at least 2 different ways to modify the pre existing elements to -

a) change the movement of the mechanism,

b) customize components,

c) introduce a new add-on feature,

d) posit a novel application.

Part III: Document

Take photos of all your work. In the caption, make sure to describe the prototypes and explain your work process. Post your answers to the following reflection questions:

  1. Did you find having a demo template useful?
  2. If you were to repeat this exercise, what would you do differently v. same?
  3. Describe the parts you've modified from the original template.
  4. Are there other mechanisms you'd like to learn how to make?
